They have collected dust for many, many years. This is hardly noticeable, but I did want to point it out. So, this pair has 3 legs with slight bends and one straight leg. An informed bookend enthusiast tells me that bronze clad bookends when subjected to heat (direct sunlight, sitting over a heat vent, a radiator, or heat producing appliance) caused the plaster to soften and then any applied force would cause the thin coat of bronze to bend or reshape based on the amount of pressure. I had always thought it was due to forcing the bookends up against the wall of a shelf, or some other immoveable object that caused the bended legs. In the original design of the bookends, the outside leg(s) of each rider extended beyond the base of the bookend. Please note that we are talking bends, NOT breaks. I also want to point out, and the pictures bear this out, some "bending" of the rider's legs. I suspect this repair was undertaken by the manufacturer because it is hardly detectable. Otherwise, the bookend is solid and in great shape. Perhaps, the cladding did not ad to the plaster underneath and this repair was undertaken to strengthen the contact point with books. I would not want to speculate what this means, but the bookend is solid with no damage at all. Under this bookend, the wooden pad has a cut out. ![]() If you will note in two of the pictures, the front face or book contact point, has four (4) small bronze nail heads. However, I will note the following: T appears to have been a professional repair to one bookend. I will let the pictures do most of the talking as to the condition of the bookends and let you be the judge of the quality. The title is seen on the face of each bookend along with the manufacturer name and the number 114. The manufacturer of this beautiful set is Pompeian Bronze Company which origniated in 1921 discontinued operations in 1930. The dimensions of this majestic pair are as follows: 9" T x 9" L x 5" W. They are rated a 5 (on a scale of 1 to 5) with 5 being RARE. Bronze clad is also known as weighted-bronze, plaster-filled bronze, bronze-coated, bronze-armored among other names. Bronze clad was very popular from 1905 to 1935 and was discontinued by manufacturers due to its expense and time consuming method of production. They are bronze clad, or a layer of of bronze over solid plaster. They are very highly sought after and can be found in Kuritzky's Encyclopedia of Bookends on page 123. These are very large bookends.VERY LARGE. ![]()
